Sitting on the dock of the bay

I can't remember when was the last time I did the post without looking back my last post.

Just have something to share about how do I feel right now, that is ....

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I'm a music lover who rarely looks at lyrics, however here is an exception.

Hope you enjoy and let me know if you feel the same (Sometimes).

The new year is coming~ Let's hope the OX year really give us some hope, realise some dreams, and most importantly bring some happiness to everyone.

After the Peak

Dear everyboy:

End of March is the official end of the peak period in the big four. Depending on the job, you may still be busy for a while, but comparatively, life should be much more relax after the peak.

These days I can go home around 7, it will take me about 45mins for me to reach home. After the dinner, it's about 9. Even though it's late, but I still can manage to do some of my own things.

Audit is a good environment to gain experience. I've been audited manufacturing, logistic, and offshore, marine service companies. In the different industries, you can see different working culture, different working style. Some company has more young people and the pay is much better. Whereas those company the average age is older, the pay seems is less as well.

Previously, I felt difficult to deal with clients as some of them are very reluctant to corporate to provide information. But after few engagements, under different seniors, I felt that's not always the case. The thing is, if you treat the client well, normally they will treat you good as well. The first few jobs we usually stay at client's place pretty late as we have to rush to finish the field work in a short time. For my last engagement, we tend to go home about 6:30 to 7, the client was appreciate us to go home early and said that to compare to the audit team last year they usually went back around 11pm. Thus they felt much better to work with us, and provided us information and corporate very well. Even the tea lady will serve us tea everyday, sometimes fruits which never happened to our other engagements.

This new senior of mine in that engagement is Philippine Chinese who joint the firm on Jan this year as well. He is a nice guy, I felt quite happy working with him, he won't chase you in a serious face, he always give us smile, thus we felt that it's not a burden working with him, instead we willing to do more work if he need.

I had my birthday party last month. Me and my girlfriend went out for a dinner on Friday, and Saturday my friends came to my house to celebrate. I prepare some dishes and hot pot for that night. One of my friends brought a bottle of New Zealand red wine which tasted very good. Having wine in Singapore is kind of luxury for us. The wine here is very expensive as the transportation and tax are high. On average you need to spend 30 dollar to buy a 10 dollar Australian wine.

It's good to have some new friends here. I felt better to talk to those colleagues who graduated from overseas rather than local Uni. I found that their vision is much wider even though Singapore locals have open mind. Those from overseas knows how to enjoy life, we have more common topics, and they are more interested in travelling and exploring, whereas most of the Singapore colleagues they more willing to work just for the work, gathering in those noisy places, shopping. The most popular places for them to go travel are Thailand, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, because those places are near to go, and cheaper for shopping is their priority.

Last Friday was Good Friday, me and my girlfriend was planning to go to an Indonesia island called Bintan, but the ferry ticket was sold out long time ago. End up we chance plan and went to another island called Batam. But Batam was far less beautiful than Bintan, the environment was bad, and dirty. People driving on the stress freely with no control, especially those motorbikes are very dangerous. Cars and taxis horned at us want to be the driver. We only went for a massage in a hotel, and did some shopping that's all. We took a taxi to a shopping centre, there were soldiers holding guns at the gate to check cars to prevent any bomb, which quite surprised us.  Due to the exchange rate advantage, (1 SGD = 5950 RP) a lot of things are very cheap for us. But we had a hard time counting the money as there are too many Zeros behind. I guess this is the most "luxury" day in my life, as I spent over 300,000 dollars (RP) in a day.

I'm planning for my next trip. Initially we plan to go to Maldives, but they charge USD, average cost would be about 3000SGD, which is too expensive. Now we change the destination to East Malaysia which has beautiful view as well. Similar style as Maldives, but much cheaper. We expect to go there around end of May or beginning of June depends on my job schedule. Currently I'm still waiting for the IPO date for one of my clients. And then my manager would be able to approve my leave.

All the best to everyone, all the best to the offpeak.

My tough job.

After a long time I haven’t updated my space, now I think it’s the time to write something.

Time flies, I can’t imagine this is already my 3rd week of working in Singapore. It’s a good thing to get a job in Singapore, so I would be able to survive here. Sounds good working in an accounting firm, but the nature of the work is very tough, long working hours through the week. Most of the time I woke up at 7 am, I have to go to client’s place to audit. We normally will working while having lunch, or start working right after the lunch. At the time we can go home, it’s about 10-12 pm. Some worse time I went back around 1:30. Sometimes have to do over time during the weekend as well. One day I step out of the office during lunch time, I suddenly notice that the sunshine is so bright, as I’ve been busy working in the office all day long, and haven’t got much chance to meet up with SUN. The worse is I even can’t find a time to shit.

This is peak period of us, expect the busy life will going on until April. The good thing of having peak is, after the peak we will have some peaceful life rather than busy throughout the whole year.

I choose this job means I have to take the pain. I hope the short pain will give a long term relieve. But by listening at the complaint from my senior colleagues, I understand that if I’m going to work in this field for long, it may be a long pain. Most of them would complain that in terms of the working hour, we are extremely underpaid. During the peak, on average our working time is about 15 hours/day, and most of the overtime cannot be charged. The incremental of the salary compare to the load of the work you receive after you’ve been promoted is in a diminishing form unless you reach manager or partner’s position.  After calculate the hourly rate we receive is about 6 dollars per hour which is about 5 AUD. In Melbourne, by working in a Chinese restaurant, the bad pay is about 7 dollars.

Let’s forget about the monetary terms. Look through a positive way that the experience we can gain from the big 4 is much worth than the cash we earned. Maybe after about 2 years, we can easily get an accounting job or progress to other big 3 for a better position. One of my supervisor said that she tried to work in a commercial firms as a manager in account’s department. In a fresh environment, although you have power, but all your members may not be able to listen to how or what you want them to do. End up, she back to accounting firm as well. I’m not sure after few years, whether the same thing would happen to me as well. In order to gain a trust or having managing power in a new environment, it is better if we can start low.

Another good thing of my job is, we audit different kind of firms, so we got to see the different industries, understand their business nature and structures, build up better interpersonal skills, as most of the time we have to obtain resource from client. Actually it’s client’s duty to provide information, but not all clients will corporate well. As the current company I’m working on is a tough experience. They reluctant to provide information, always push us to find information from their computer network, most of the information they provide is in hardcopy, whereas we need to do casting to ensure the accuracy of the figures. A softcopy would be preferred as a hard copy will extensively increase our time consuming and reduce efficiency. I guess maybe this client has some revenge attitude.

As I mentioned that most of the time we are at client’s place to access their information. So each morning we can take a taxi to go rather than waiting for the bus. In a way we save some money, but compare to the extreme long working hour, I rather get some more sleep, and take bus to go work.

Normally we work as a term with 2-3 members. It’s quite fun working as a team; as the environment is more relax. More communication will be involved in this team work, so we may know each other better than some normal office job.

This Saturday I will be going to work in one of the subsidiaries of a Singapore listed company in China for 2 weeks. The timeline is very tight, as the flights are all fully booked so we have to finish the job early and work harder. One of the weekends I may go back to Hangzhou as well, I can ship some more things back to Singapore. But I don’t think I will spend my time with my family during Chinese New Year.

It’s late night again, it’s time to sleep and get ready for the new Monday work.
